Colorado Democrats are monitoring one key turnout number as the Senate results come in there: 2 million.
That’s how many voters they think need to cast ballots to give Sen. Mark Udall (D-CO) a chance at beating the polling averages and topping Republican Cory Gardner in one of the most important Senate races in the country, according to multiple sources familiar with the race.
There is some nuance to that number, but it would be a general indication that Democrats turned out enough voters to pull what the polling would say is an upset for Udall. It would also be an improvement on the 1.8 million voters who came out in 2010 when Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO) won unexpectedly.
This is the first year Colorado has held an election with all ballots mailed in.
“The last wave favors Democrats — not by a lot, but by enough,” one source said.
Sources said that, at least according to their projections as of 7:30 p.m. ET, they should get there. Polls close at 9 p.m. ET.
“Looking like a sure thing,” one source said of the 2 million figure, adding that even 2.1 million could be in reach.
