Colorado’s Bureau of Investigation director Ronald Sloan told the Denver Post that universal background checks for gun purchases would overwhelm the state’s already exhausted system.

As of now, CBI has about 10,000 checks in its queue which results in a wait time of about one week for gun purchases. Proposals to tighten the background check process would increase the number of checks submitted by about 40 percent, Sloan projects.

“It’s going to take some time to chip away at the queue now,” Sloan said. “We would lose ground.”
