New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie ® has called for a ballot referendum in November to let voters decide on a constitutional amendment that would legalize gay marriage in the state.

Democratic lawmakers have said that they have the votes to pass a bill to legalize same-sex marriage that is currently working its way through the legislature, though Christie had indicated that he might veto it if it reaches his desk. “Let’s put the question of same sex marriage on the ballot,” Christie said on Tuesday. “It shouldn’t be decided by 121 people in Trenton.”
