Ahead of a potentially landmark decision on the Boy Scouts of America’s longstanding ban on gay youths, an employee of the organization came out of the closet anonymously in a piece published Tuesday in Time Magazine.
Identified only as “a full-time paid professional employee” of the BSA, the writer made a case that the organization “must be inclusive of gay boys and adults.” The BSA’s National Council will vote Thursday whether or not to allow openly gay youths in the organization, after deciding last month retain the ban on gay adults serving in leadership positions.
“The Boy Scouts of America is not, I believe, on a sustainable path as long as any portion of the ban on gay members in Scouting continues,” the employee wrote. “Strategic partnerships will be drastically reduced. I have personal experience working with many organizations, which refused to be a partner with my local scouting council because of the ban on gay members.”
