House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) has been cagey about whether he backs a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and an interview with CNN [update: the quote was given to ABC’s Jon Karl] on Tuesday was no exception according to this early excerpt from Dana Bash:

While Boehner has kept quiet on a path to citizenship, he’s publicly encouraged Republican representatives who are working with Democrats on a still unannounced immigration plan.
Update: Asked about the context of the “foreplay” quote, Boehner spokesman Michael Steel indiciated to TPM that it was a reference to the legislative process, not any details of a final bill.
“In response to a question from ABC’s Jon Karl, Boehner declined to speculate on the final details of an immigration bill when hearings on the issue have barely started,” Steel said in an e-mail.
