UNITED STATES - September 2: Former Sen. Bob Dole. R-Kan., speaks during an event to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Allied Forces Victory in the Pacific and the end of World War II in Washington, Wednesday, September 2, 2015. Although the World War II effectively ended in August, 1945, after Japanese forces surrendered to the Allied Forces, it was on September 2, 1945, that a formal surrender ceremony in Tokyo Bay occurred aboard the USS Missouri, that officially ended the war. Then President Harry Truman declared September 2 to be V-J Day, or Victory over Japan Day. (Photo By Al Drago/CQ Roll Call) (CQ Roll Call via AP Images) MORE LESS

Bob Dole, a former senator and Republican presidential nominee, on Friday endorsed Donald Trump as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

“The voters of our country have turned out in record numbers to support Mr. Trump. It is important that their votes be honored and it is time that we support the party’s presumptive nominee, Donald J. Trump. I plan to attend the RNC convention in Cleveland to show my support for our party and our ticket, as I have done my entire life,” Dole said in a statement released by the Trump campaign. “We must unite as a party to defeat Hillary Clinton. Donald Trump is our party’s presumptive nominee and our best chance at taking back the White House this November.”

Dole’s endorsement comes even as other former Republican nominees and presidents like Mitt Romney, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush have declined to back Trump’s candidacy.

  1. No shock here: Dole was always one of the worst, a classic right wing hatchet guy.

  2. My sense has always been that Dole has a bottomless enmity towards the Bush clan, at least since 1988 if not before,
and that the lowest point of his public life was when he did hatchet duty for GWB/Rove by questioning Kerry’s war service.
I do wonder if part of this is settling old scores.

Nobody not even Bush/Rove forced him to do that, it is just another example of the GOP putting party before country.

  4. “Trump is our party’s . . . best chance at taking back the White House this November.”

An incisive analysis demonstrating the vast knowledge he accumulated during 35 years in government. That and also knowing that Trump is his party’s only chance at taking back the White House this year.

  5. “Party Before Country” is exactly the phrase I thought of while reading this article.

    Shameful.
