Research in Motion, the Canadian company that makes the BlackBerry line of devices, has unveiled a beta version of a new feature for its popular included BlackBerry Messenger text-messaging service: voice calling over WiFi, The Verge reported. This allows users to avoid racking up minutes on their cell carrier plans. The beta version is part of an update to older devices, BBM 7.0. RIM, which has seen the market share of BlackBerry devices erode rapidly in the past three years due to the proliferation of Android and Apple smartphones, is gearing up for an attempted comeback with a new operating system, BlackBerry 10, to be released with two new smartphones on January 30, 2013.
