Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) said Tuesday that it would be a “great idea” to have a woman as his running mate and, when pressed, suggested Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) as a potential vice presidential pick.

Mark Halperin asked Sanders on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” if he was committed to choosing a woman as his running mate. An aide to Sanders’ Democratic presidential opponent, Hillary Clinton, told The Boston Globe last week that a woman would be on her shortlist of vice presidential candidates.

“Well I’m not going to—you have to look at the best candidates you can. But I think your point is well taken,” Sanders replied. “I think the women of this country, the people of this country understand that it would be a great idea to have a woman as vice president and something I would give very, very serious thought to.”

Sanders said there were “many women” qualified for the job and named Warren when pressed to answer exactly which women he would consider.

“I think it’s a little bit early to be speculating on that. But I think, as you know, there are people in life, Elizabeth Warren, I think, has been a real champion in standing up for working families, taking on Wall Street,” Sanders said. “There are other fantastic women who have been active in all kinds of fights who I think would make great vice presidential candidates.”

Warren has not endorsed either candidate and notably didn’t do so ahead of her state’s primary.
