Someone claiming to be affiliated with the hackitivist collective Anonymous published 1 million Apple device identification numbers, or UDIDs, late Monday, which were allegedly retrieved along with 11 million more from hacking an FBI agent’s laptop. The FBI responded late Tuesday, saying in a statement:
“At this time there is no evidence indicating that an FBI laptop was compromised or that the FBI either sought or obtained this data.”
Noting that the statement was far from an iron-clad denial, the Anonymous-affiliated Twitter account that first published the links to the UDID files responded to the FBI’s statement with one of its own on Tuesday, tweeting:
“Actually they are merely saying that they have no evidence for that. Did anyone expect anything else? We have no reason to lie.”
Shortly thereafter, the official FBI Twitter account tweeted a firmer denial, prompting a Twitter fight between the Anonymous and FBI accounts.
