It was pretty clear to anyone who saw the tape that Vincent Sheheen simply got a bit tongue-tied last week when he accidentally said the word “whore” while talking about South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R). But that apparently doesn’t make a difference to Ann Romney.

“When I first heard about it, it hit me right in my gut,” Romney told CNN on Monday. “My nerve endings went haywire. It’s so upsetting when you know someone can say something like that about a woman, and not have any kind of reaction. It’s so unacceptable. Nikki is a great girl and has been a great governor.”

Sheheen, Haley’s Democratic challenger, bungled the line at a campaign event on Thursday in Florence, S.C.

“And we are going to escort whore out the door,” he said in reference to Haley before immediately correcting himself.

“We’re gonna escort her out the door.”

Sheheen’s campaign was quick to tamp down any controversy. The candidate himself later clarified his remarks and apologized “if anybody heard wrong.”
