Vincent Sheheen got a little tripped up last week and was forced to apologize for dropping a word he says he never even uses in private — much less a campaign rally.

“Listen, sometimes when you’re speaking five or 10 times a day, your words get a little bit garbled,” the South Carolina state senator and Democratic gubernatorial hopeful explained to radio host Bryan Crabtree in an interview posted online Monday. “When they get garbled, and it does happen to me I go back and say exactly what I meant, and you heard in that clip that I meant her — h.e.r.”

The garbled comment came at an event on Thursday, when Sheheen told supporters that they were going to vote Gov. Nikki Haley (R) out of office on Election Day.

“And we are going to escort whore out the door,” Sheheen said before quickly rebounding. “We’re gonna escort her out the door.”

Amid the ensuing bedlam, Sheheen giggled awkwardly while pointing at the attendees, many of whom were in stitches.

“Y’all,” he said. “Think about it, y’all. Alright, calm down out there.”

Sheheen noted in his interview with Crabtree that he immediately corrected himself and that he clearly meant to say “her.”

“And you know, listen. My mom’s around, and I can promise you I don’t use that word, the word a few people people are claiming that I used,” Sheheen said. “I don’t use it in private, I don’t use it in public but if anybody heard wrong, and certainly my words were garbled, then, you know, I apologize because I don’t want to send that message to anybody.”
