A spokesman for Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) encouraged the senators’ supporters in Ohio to vote for Gov. John Kasich in a Friday interview on CNN.
“Yeah, I think I’m just stating the obvious, if you are a Republican primary voter in Ohio and you want to defeat Donald Trump, your best chance in Ohio is John Kasich,” Alex Conant, Rubio’s communications director, said.
Conant also said voters should back Rubio in Tuesday’s Florida primary, calling him the only candidate with a “mathematical shot” of beating the billionaire.
Pressed again by the CNN anchors to clarify the directive, Conant reiterated that Kasich has the best chance of beating Trump in his home state.
“My answer is John Kasich is the one candidate in Ohio that can beat Donald Trump. That’s stating the obvious,” he said. “That is indisputable. Everybody would say that.”
