Startup Incubator General Assembly Closes A Round Of Financing And Eyes Retail Space Abroad

General Electric's former headquarters in Schenectady, New York.

General Assembly, a startup incubator that hosts entrepreneurship classes for the community, announced a $4.25 million round of funding and a partnership with General Electric today.

In addition, Business Insider has learned that the four founders have been looking into two more retail spaces, one in midtown Manhattan and another abroad, most likely in London.

A source familiar with General Assembly says it was looking into real estate firm The Winter Organization, but doesn’t think it will be the realtor General Assembly expands with.

When we inquired, GA cofounder Adam Pritzker replied, “We’re lucky to have the opportunity to explore some of the inbound interest in New York and other cities, but haven’t committed to anything as we’re really focused on building out our educational product.”

With the fresh cash from Howard Schultz’s Maveron fund, Yuri Milner’s DST Global, and Jeff Bezos’s Bezos Expeditions, Alexis Ohanian, Hosain Rahman, and Alex Asseily, General Assembly can start expanding globally and building out online courses.

“So will we open a bunch more campuses? Put all our classes online? Start training executives? We don’t know,” writes cofounder Brad Harvgreaves. “Right now we’re singularly focused on continuing to create a great, meaningful experience at our New York campus. That said, we see the bigger picture: there is immense demand for social, application-driven education in technology, design, and entrepreneurship, and we’re committed to addressing this real need.”
