Jon Stewart opened his show on Wednesday celebrating President Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage.
“There you have it,” Stewart said. “The president is gay … friendly. Gay friendly.” It’s exciting news for equal rights for all citizens, Stewart said, and a moment that “can in no way be dampened by the codifying of bigotry in, let’s say, the state in which Democrats are going to be holding their convention,” he added.
That would be North Carolina, where a constitutional amendment passed on Tuesday that makes marriage between a man and a woman the only legal union between two people in the state.
“Congratulations, North Carolina, because for a moment I was feeling a brief glimpse of what I guess doctors would call happiness and a full heart, and I appreciate you ending that,” Stewart said.
