More on the Reagan’s ghost theme at tonight’s big presidential debate: turns out that even when he was a Democrat, Rick Perry was a big Ronald Reagan fan.
Perry critics like Ron Paul have attacked the Texas governor for his years as a Democrat in the ’80s, claiming they make it hard for him to claim the Reagan legacy.
Not so, says Perry for president adviser Ray Sullivan.
“Rick perry voted for president Reagan,” Sullivan told MSNBC this morning. He said Perry went against his own party at the time and cast ballots for the Republican presidential nominee in 1980 and 1984.
Perry was apparently not as fond of Reagan’s vice president as he was of the man himself. In 1988, the year before Perry switched parties and became a Democrat, he was a big supporter of then-Sen. Al Gore’s (D-TN) first presidential bid.
