Seen This Movie Before

You can see our reported story here about Sen. Snowe’s suggestion that she may still be in play for financial reform — thus holding out the hope that the Dems can bust a Republican filibuster.

Since I’m writing here in the opiniony section of the site: I was just wondering. Aren’t we about in the Third Act where Snowe comes in and jerks the Dems around for a few weeks before getting upset about the process and joining the filibuster? Thought so. Thanks.

Not A Pretty Picture

Here’s the trendline for the congressional generic ballot going back to January 1st.

Rasmussen has a much higher spread for the GOP than any other pollster. But even if you remove their numbers (as we have in the graph below), the trend looks similar.

Those Brits

A quick update on the election in the UK. The latest polls show a relatively consistent picture: The Tories ahead, followed by the Liberal Democrats and then Labour in third place. But they’re all closely bunched together.

The key takeaways at the moment are that the current national numbers suggest that none of the three parties will come close to secure a majority on their own. Indeed it seems quite possible that Labour could come in third in the national percentage and win the most seats. Second, it seems clear that the Liberal Democrats surge over the weekend has not petered out.

See the latest poll numbers here and the BBC’s Seat Calculator here.

The BBC reports that Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg next move is going to be a major attack on the UK’s big banks.

Josh Green Blogging

I did not realize that The Atlantic had, it seems, given my dear friend Josh Green a full fledged blog at their site. (Josh has been one of the magazine’s premier writers for going on a decade now.) This is actually a grievous blow to TPM as it will probably mean many fewer tips and leads that I can use un-sourced to sound smart and well-sourced at TPM. But it can be a boon for you as a reader. So on that basis I shall pass on the link. Read More

Gift That Keeps on Giving

The DNC rewinds to the John McCain’s “fundamentals of the economy are sound” line for its new commercial attacking the GOP on financial reform.

Another interesting question: did the Dems have any plan in place for what they’d do if Mitch McConnell got all the Republicans together to oppose reform? Don’t be shocked by the answer, which we’ll have for you shortly.

Sell on the High

Eric Cantor just endorsed Marco Rubio. But with Charlie Crist bouncing on the diving board and about to dive out of the GOP, I have to imagine there’s a lot of figuring among national GOPers. No one wants to be the last to renounce Crist — not just endorse Rubio but give a ‘Crist be gone!’ statement — and it won’t count for much once he’s already left the party. So is there a prize to the truly bold 2012 presidential contender who tells Crist to just leave the GOP now?
