Anybody Got A Plan?

Democrats in Congress wield the power of the majority and the advantages of incumbency but they’re also facing a potential trouncing at the polls in November.

So how are congressional Democrats planning to use the tools still at their disposal to hold on to their majorities?

Grim

On a serious note, I wanted to draw your attention to the news today about Dick Cheney’s latest heart setback. The reports have, on their face, been fairly upbeat, with Cheney himself issuing a statement about the surgery he had last week to implant a pump to help his heart overcome his congestive heart failure. The surgery was a success, Cheney is resting comfortably, etc.

But reading between the lines, you’re left with the distinct impression that Cheney, 69, is entering the late stages of congestive heart failure, that his prognosis is not very good, and that the available treatment options are very limited. Big Effing Deal

The Senate just broke the Republican filibuster of financial reform, with the bare minimum of 60 votes required. That is the final hurdle to passage of the long-awaited reform bill (almost two years after the September 2008 financial meltdown began). The final vote, which only requires a simple majority to pass, is expected later today. That will make it official, but the vote just now was the critical one.

Do NOT Piss Off The Waiters

Minnesota Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer is still feeling the blowback from his claim that waiters are overpaid. He ended a town hall meeting early last night (at a restaurant) after an attendee “tipped” Emmer by pouring a bag of 2,000 pennies in front of him.
