Still Working At It

John McCain has been declaring that Washington is broken since at least 1989 (he’s been in Congress since 1983). Jon Stewart has the video take-down. Pay special attention to the evolving eyeglass styles.

Spy v Spy (D’oh! Edition)

We first heard that someone was sending out absentee ballots to Illinois Dems with key, but subtle, errors contained in them. The sort that would likely lead to those ballots getting tossed in a close race. It looked like it might be part of a dirty tricks campaign.

Alas, no. The Dems just sent out tons of error-riddled absentee ballot applications.

Stung

Feds indict Virginia man for allegedly plotting to launch bomb attacks on the DC Metro transit system in suburban Northern Virginia. The people he is charged with plotting with were federal agents.

Late Update: From the Washington Post:

The investigation is focused on a naturalized U.S. citizen, originally from Pakistan, who became the target of an undercover sting operation, the sources said. An administration official said the man drew the attention of law enforcement officials by seeking to obtain unspecified materials. The planned attack was not imminent, the sources said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the matter remains under investigation.

Are You Coming To DC?

The overwhelming majority of TPM readers are pro-sanity, so I imagine quite a few of you will be coming to DC this weekend for the “Rally To Restore Sanity.” We have fewer pro-fear readers, but the “March To Keep Fear Alive” will be a draw, too.

So here’s the deal. We’re going to have reporters and photographers in the field on Saturday providing live updating coverage (as long as the cellphone networks allow). But they’re only going to be able to cover one slice of the event. That’s where you come in.

We want your photographs and your observations and invitations to your parties. Training in from New York Friday night? Send us a picture. Road tripping in with friends? Send us your account. Partying like rock stars on Saturday night? We’ll accept those pics, too. You know where to send them (the “Send Comments & News Tips” link at the top of this page).

Help cover the event and give fellow readers a better sense of what’s happening. Keep us posted.

FINAL CALL FOR WINTER INTERNS

TPM is currently interviewing for our Winter intern cycle. TPM interns have gone on to jobs at The Washington Post, The Daily Beast, The Wall Street Journal, the Huffington Post, Yahoo, The New Republic, Slate, The New York Sun and sundry other cool places as well as frequently getting hired at TPM.

TPM interns are probably as intimately and rapidly involved in the preparation and production of news coverage as interns at any other news organization. And that ranges from work on the news section of the front page to research for our stories to video editing to bylined articles. To learn more and find out how to apply, click here.

Non-Voters Getting Pumped Over Sestak

This is a pretty telling and (for me) depressing poll out from CNN on the PA Senate race. Pat Toomey is 4 points up over Joe Sestak (roughly in line with other polls) by 49% to 45%. That’s likely voters. Among registered voters it’s 47% to 43% in Sestak’s favor. A pretty big spread. But it gets better. That’s 4 points better than Sestak did in the previous poll, among registered voters, even though he stayed the same with likely voters.

In other words, Sestak is catching fire with people who are too languid and unmotivated to turn out and vote.

Rock on.

Even a bigger bummer? This chart.
