Insurrection?

House Democrats are caucusing now to elect their leaders for the new Congress. Word from the meeting, via our Brian Beutler, is that Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR), who is pushing for a delay in electing new leaders until December, has succeeded in getting a vote on such a delay. The caucus is now voting on DeFazio’s proposal.

: DeFazio’s delay proposal failed 129-68.

Bad Sign for Pelosi

Two term Rep. Heath Shuler (D-NC), as anything other than a protest candidate against Nancy Pelosi, was a preposterous candidate to lead the smaller, more liberal House Democratic caucus. And it’s not my understanding that he did anything to canvass for votes. So it’s a bad sign for Nancy Pelosi that 43 members of the caucus voted for the guy. That’s almost a quarter of the caucus. If a serious challenger had opposed her, it would have been a tough race.

AP Calls It For Murkowski

Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s historic write-in campaign has allowed her to retain her Senate seat in Alaska. The AP is now calling the race, more than two weeks after the election and after days of write-in ballot counting.
