Are Michael Steele’s problems ‘about race’?
Questions like this are always wildly over-determined. Things are never one thing or another. And Steele spends so much time acting like such a clown and, it seems, spending pretty profligately at the RNC that the criticisms of him have plenty of basis. But I also don’t think that there’s any question that his race is in the mix.
After all, if being a clown and spending money on lots of silly creature comforts and baubles and glitz for the big money givers got everyone in trouble there’d be no one left to turn out the lights when they had to shut the whole place down.
Late Update: Still, this quote from Gibbs this morning on Steele’s comments has some zing: “That is a fairly silly comment to make. I think Michael Steele’s problem isn’t the race card it’s the credit card.” As in so many things in life, it can be both: Steele acts like a clown and spends money like water. But with who Steele has to work with and for in the GOP, race is always a subtext of the conversation. And sometimes not even that sub.
