This Krugman post is worth a read for the stellar headline alone, but beyond that he does a good job reminding people that conservatives happily touted the “privatization” of Social Security until they realized that term polled poorly. So even though they still stand by the concept, see e.g., the House GOP budget plan put forth by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), they’ve been running from that term ever since.
