Commenting Help

We’re installing a new commenting system. And some readers have been having some problems over the weekend. Join me after the jump for pointers and explanation.

Okay, here’s the gist. We’re working with a new commenting system. And over the weekend we had a problem with the communication between our ‘auth’ system (how you log in) and the new commenting system. That’s led to a lot of confusion and some difficulties for a number of readers. The gist is people are trying to comment when they’re not actually logged in — but our system isn’t making it clear that they’re not logged in. Thus the disconnect and the difficulty.

We hope to have this problem resolved by the end of the day. And we’ll update you this afternoon. Here’s what should work for now if you’re having a problem.

When you’re on a story page where you want to comment, go to the top of the page and see whether you’re logged in in the upper left hand corner of the page. If it says “Login”, then you’re not logged in. And you need to click that login link. If you are logged in that little snippet of text will say, Hi Josh. Once you’ve verified you’re logged in — on the page you’re trying to comment on and not on the front page of the site, you should be fine.

As I said, this is pretty unwieldy. But we should have the system back working like normal by the end of the day. We appreciate your patience. If you have more questions, please email us at the tips/comment link on the upper right hand side of the page.
