Last night I asked you: what’s the dumbest thing you’ve ever done. And I kicked it off by sharing with you one of the stupidest things I’ve ever done (almost blowing up a gas station when I was in High School.) And now here are some of your responses.
We’re starting with TPM Reader SM describing how she ended up licking the cord on her MacBook to make it work better.
I was, incredibly, in my early 30s–about 10 years ago. I had this old Mac laptop, and after a while, the power cord got iffy–the little part that plugged into the computer wouldn’t work unless it was just so. I’d have to kind of twist it around in the socket on the computer and then after a while, that didn’t work either. I also had to pull it out ever so slightly at the same time, to get it to supply the machine with juice. And so soon, it was taking me five minutes to get the plug where it would work every time I turned on the machine. And then finally, no matter how much I tinkered, and pulled and tugged, it wouldn’t work at all. And it was very late at night, and I was on deadline and bleary-eyed and I was desperate for my machine to work. So, I thought to myself, well maybe if I just wet it a little, it would help the electricity flow. to Except I had no glass of water in the bedroom or wherever it was that I was working. So, I took the end of the plug, the part that sticks into the tiny socket on the side of the computer, and without even thinking, I LICKED it–to give it moisture that way. And of course, since the power cord was still plugged in when I did this, I got this MAJOR shock on my tongue. And I remember sitting there, just dumbstruck: “OMG, that is the STUPIDEST thing I’ve ever done!!! I could have KILLED myself!!” Needless to say, I went out the next day and bought a new power cord…..
