As the Democratic Party looks to recover from the midterm shellacking, a new CNN poll found that support for Obama’s policies has dipped 10 percentage points over the past year. Yet despite the sharp drop, a majority of Americans still support the President’s policies.
In the poll, 61% percent of respondents said they hoped Obama’s policies would succeed, while 27% said they hoped his policies would fail. Last year, CNN pegged that split at 71% to 22%.
The poll asked:
In general, do you hope that Barack Obama’s policies will succeed or do you hope that his policies will fail?
The poll — perhaps unsurprisingly — shows that the President’s support has dwindled since his inauguration. When CNN asked the same question in March 2009, a whopping 86% said they hoped Obama’s policies would succeed, versus just 11% who hoped they would fail.
The poll also found that a slim plurality of Americans now believe Obama’s policies will not be successful. Forty-four percent of respondents said they thought Obama’s policies would succeed, while 47% thought his policies would fail. Last year, 52% though his policies would succeed, and 41% thought they would fail.
Given that voters just handed the House over to Republicans, that plurality isn’t too surprising either.
The CNN poll was conducted December 17-19 among 1,008 adults nationwide. It has a margin of error of 3.0%.
