From The Reporter’s Notebook
Donald Trump abruptly hung up on Washington Post reporters when they asked him about reports that he used to masquerade as his own publicist in interviews, TPM’s Allegra Kirkland wrote. The Post’s Marc Fisher and Will Hobson reported that when they called back, Trump’s secretary told them, “I heard you got disconnected. He can’t take the call now. I don’t know what happened.”
Agree or Disagree?
Josh Marshall: “So what’s up? In real terms, even what we see on TV – the fancy suits, limos, private jets – would be impossible to sustain on $500k a year. But maybe Trump really is only worth $200m or $300m, as biographer Timothy O’Brien reported a decade ago. Or perhaps he actually is a billionaire but has things arranged so aggressively that he managed to report less than $500k in income on his tax returns. Or maybe he’s just an inveterate tax cheat who can’t resist a minuscule tax break he doesn’t qualify for?”
BUZZING: Today in the Hive
From a TPM Prime member: “I think that while we may have some hope of reining in the worst effects of climate change (I don’t think there is much hope, but there is some) we cannot stem the tide. It is coming no matter what we do. In fact, it is here. This summer may very well give us an ice-free Arctic. Think of that. Compared to say, Bangladesh, our worries are relatively limited, but every coastal city is going to face this in the next century or so (yes, I think Hansen is right, and so far everything is fitting much better into worst case scenarios than otherwise.) Back in 2005, some people said that New Orleans was doomed and should not be rebuilt, and they were met with anger and indignation. Of course it is doomed. Any one who proposes abandoning infrastructure is going to meet with that anger. I suppose one practical way to prevent people from settling in such places would be denying them mortgages. The long term value of property in these climate vulnerable places is falling (heck unless you can breathe water it is zero), and the insurance industry is well aware of this.”
