Did Abbott Let Scammy Trump U Off Easy? This Ex-AG Staffer Says He Did

The Gist: An investigation into Trump University a few years back was “quietly dropped” under then-state attorney general Abbott. Three years later Trump donated to Abbott’s gubernatorial campaign.

Woman Raped By Ex-Stanford Swimmer Delivers Powerful Statement In Court

The Gist: A six-month jail term for a former Stanford University swimmer convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman is being decried as a slap on the wrist.

CNN Host Repeatedly Asks Trump If His Comments About The Judge Are Racist

The Gist: CNN “State of the Union” host Jake Tapper relentlessly pressed Trump on whether he considered the comments he made about the federal judge presiding over his case racist.

From The Reporter’s Notebook

In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Republican presumptive nominee Donald Trump defended his ability to take criticism and his temperament following jabs from Hillary Clinton during her foreign policy speech, TPM’s Kristin Salaky reported. “Well, I don’t have thin skin,” Trump protested. “I have very strong and thick skin. If you do a report and it’s not necessarily positive but, you’re right, I never complain. I do complain when it’s a lie or when it’s wrong.”

Agree or Disagree?

Josh Marshall: “After two rallies and a flurry of interviews there’s no question Clinton has gotten to Trump in a big way. As she said, he is very thin skinned. (Emphatically denying that you’re thin-skinned is not a credible rebuttal.) Given who he is, being denigrated by a strong woman must cut deeply. Underneath the angry talk, he appears befuddled and uncertain about just how to respond. That is mainly because even before her assault he’d maxed out his invective. She was crooked, a liar, untalented, a lightweight, a sexual predator by proxy. How exactly do you escalate from there?”

Say What?!

“He is a member of a club or society, very strongly pro-Mexican, which is all fine. but I say he’s got bias. I want to build a wall.”

– Trump is concerned that Mexican-American judge Gonzalo Curiel is biased against him.

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: “Perhaps Sanders is capable of this sort of virtuosity as well. Right now there’s no way of knowing, because there’s been only scattered excavation of Sanders’ radical connections. He has never been asked to account for his relationship with the Trotskyist Socialist Workers Party, for which he served as a presidential elector in 1980. At the time, the party’s platform called for abolishing the U.S. military budget and proclaimed “solidarity” with revolutionary Iran. (This was in the middle of the Iranian hostage crisis.) There’s been little cable news chatter about Sanders’ 1985 trip to Nicaragua, where he reportedly joined a Sandinista rally with a crowd chanting, “Here, there, everywhere/ The Yankee will die.” It would be nice if this were due to a national consensus on the criminal nature of America’s support for the Contras. More likely, the media’s attention has simply been elsewhere.”
