Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) offered a full-throated endorsement for Hillary Clinton on Tuesday. He had previously withheld support in the hopes of having greater influence on the platform at the Democratic National Convention in mid-July. As TPM’s Allegra Kirkland notes, Sanders signaled that he managed to use this leverage during negotiations to create “the most progressive platform in the history of the Democratic Party,” and that this compromise allowed him to feel comfortable endorsing Clinton despite their differences.
Agree or Disagree?
Josh Marshall: “In recent editions of the Trump for President Dumpster Fire reality show, we’ve been seeing the name of retired Gen. Michael Flynn, former head of the Defense Intelligence Agency who was forced out in 2014 over policy clashes with Obama administration officials and went on to become a top Obama critic since leaving the military. He has reportedly been an informal campaign foreign policy advisor to Donald Trump for some time now. Now he’s rapidly emerged as a leading vice presidential contender. It seems so serious that after yesterday saying that he was pro-choice and creating a instant firestorm on the right, he today ‘clarified’ that he’s actually pro-life. But enough of all that, stop the presses: I’ve just uncovered information that almost certainly proves that Flynn is completely nuts.”

From a TPM Prime member: “Instead, he took as much time as he could to wring as many platform concessions from Democratic Party elites as possible, concluding with last weekend’s meeting in Orlando. The results were good, not great. The Democratic Party remains committed to TPP (despite HRC’s blisteringly cynical disavowal of it during primary season), to fracking, to plutocratic campaign finance, and to the AIPAC agenda of occupation denial and free speech suppression. But at least he accomplished some important results on the minimum wage, health policy, and the renewable energy sector.”
