The House Freedom Caucus Is Agonizing Over What To Do About Donald Trump

The Gist: The Freedom Caucus’ own rhetoric, including its promises to repeal Obamacare (even though Obama is in office), has fueled some of the anger and resentment against Washington that Donald Trump has benefited from. But while the Freedom Caucus and Trump both love raging against the so-called Washington establishment, there are a lot of Freedom Caucus members who wish they could put Trump back in the bottle.

The daughter of Illinois state representative Cynthia Soto, as well as a campaign volunteer, are both facing charges after allegedly attacking the lawmaker’s opponent, Robert Zwolinksi, with a staple gun earlier this month, TPM’s Kristin Salaky wrote. Zwolinksi ultimately lost to Soto, but is now calling for her to resign.

Agree or Disagree?

“Trump’s rallies too are quickly becoming as ritualized as pro-wrestling. I very much doubt the first protesters at Trump rallies knew this would emerge as the model, and likely the same for his supporters. But at this point all the protesters pretty much get this drill, as do the Trump supporters. Do we think the guy who assaulted the protester on the way out of the arena in Tucson last night hadn’t seen the video of John McGraw assaulting the protester in Fayetteville earlier this month? Of course he had. Do protesters who go to Trump rallies now know there’s a decent chance they’ll get clocked by a Trump supporter and end up on a viral video? Of course they do. Others are simply there for the show. The woman on Twitter who shot the second video in this post said: “Went to the Trump rally just to see how crazy it would be……..this is insane” This is not to equate the protesters and the Trump supporters. But each are now filling increasingly defined roles in the recurring drama

Say What?!

“Are we sure he’s a Mormon? Are we sure? He choked. He choked.”

Trump questioned Romney’s religion at a rally in Utah on Friday.

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: “My own complaint has long been not that Sanders wants to go too far, but that he does not want to go far enough. I see the system as broken beyond the point of repair. We cannot teak our way to where we need to be. Adjusting marginal tax rates, changing deductions, regulating wall street, none of that is the kind of systemic change i see as necessary. Our economic system has run to its logical conclusion. The Monopoly game is over. We have winners and losers. They can keep loaning the losers the cost of landing their squares, but we are just marking time. We need a reset, a do-over. It may never happen. We may just be stuck here until we are gone. But if that is the case, this is also the pinnacle of human existence. With all the wealth in so few hands, there is no reason or impetus for advancement. Or it might happen. If it does, the questions are whether it will come from within or without, whether it will be peaceful or violent. Not sure that it matters.”
