Republican frontrunner Donald Trump asked attendees at his Utah rally on Friday if former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney “was really Mormon.”
Trump said his evangelical supporters have been “so amazing,” but he loves “the Mormons.”
“Do I love the Mormons,” Trump said to applause and cheers from the crowd in Salt Lake City.
He said he has “lots of friends” in Salt Lake City, but Romney is not one of them.
Then Trump asked, “Are we sure he’s a Mormon? Are we sure? He choked. He choked.”
Trump and Romney have been at odds since Romney started denouncing Trump’s candidacy on Twitter. Then the Republican Party’s last presidential nominee gave a speech at the beginning of March trashing the current frontrunner’s candidacy. Romney said “the prospects for a safe and prosperous future are greatly diminished” if the GOP nominates Trump.
