Jeb Bush Goes Straight At Trump: ISIL Strategy Is ‘Just Crazy’

The Gist:  The two candidates got into a heated exchange during Tuesday’s national security debate, with Bush knocking Trump’s counter-terror proposals as proof of his “lack of seriousness.”

From The Reporter’s Notebook

As TPM’s Sara Jerde flagged, Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told reporters Tuesday that a brokered GOP convention was “highly unlikely.” As CNN noted, McConnell also said that it hadn’t happened “in a very long time.” The network reported that the last time there was a “brokered” convention was when New York Gov. Thomas Dewey triumphed in 1948.

Agree or Disagree?

Josh Marshall: What emerged during Tuesday night’s GOP debate was a “picture of a country totally unhinged by ISIL and the gruesome massacre in San Bernardino, California. The first half of the debate was roiled by repeated invocations of fear, the celebration of fear, the demand that people feel and react to their fear.”

Say What?!

“What Ted Cruz has done here is kinda cute. You see, he’s technically correct, that according to the satellite data, there hasn’t been a significant increase in global temperatures in 18 years. But we don’t usually measure in time periods of 18 years unless you’re calculating child support.”

– Trevor Noah mocked Ted Cruz’s “cute” take on global warming.

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: “The secretary to CEO story is bullshit. She was a secretary after college and then got an MBA and then pursued her corporate climb. Just like lots of people. The implication is that she pulled herself up by the bootstraps and went from the bottom to the top of a company based on her hard work and brilliance. Nonsense. But in business there is only one goal. Fiorina’s current goal is to get the presidential nomination or maybe get on the ticket as vice president. Nothing else matters at all. Whatever works is totally OK.”

Related: A radio host who endorsed Ted Cruz said Fiorina went “full vagina” in the debate (whatever that means).
