Trump: Assimilation ‘Close’ To ‘Nonexistent’ Among American Muslims

The Gist: Trump argued that “a percentage” of Muslim Americans — including those who have been in the country for generations — want to carry out terrorist attacks.

From The Reporter’s Notebook

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) was forced to respond to Donald Trump’s Monday speech ramping up rhetoric about Muslims and immigrants during a Tuesday press conference, TPM’s Caitlin MacNeal reported. He distanced himself from the presumptive Republican presidential nominee by emphasizing that the U.S. is at war with “radical Islam,” not all Muslims. But he dodged a question about Trump’s suggestion that Obama has been working with terrorists.

Agree or Disagree?

Josh Marshall: “Trump isn’t just someone who speaks out of turn, runs an intuition based campaign or isn’t politically correct. There’s something much, much darker about him. As happens with many would be demagogues or authoritarian rulers the prospect of real power isn’t steadying him. We’re seeing no process – either instigated by the candidate or by those around him – to bottle the magic, build some campaign structure around him to stabilize the campaign and make it more sustainable. On the contrary, as happens with demagogues and violent authoritarians, proximity to power is making him more unbridled, hotter and less restrained.”

Say What?!

“Unfortunately, the Obama administration’s political correctness prevented anything from being done about it.”

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: “There are uses for hunting rifles, shotguns, pistols–if you are a hunter, or live on a farm, or, perhaps, for self-protection in some circumstances. But, there is really no practical use for an assault rifle. The thing is expensive, uses lots of ammunition if you want to shoot it, is a constant hazard if there are children around, is a constant theft risk. And it is good for nothing. You wouldn’t shoot a deer with it. For protection of your house, a 12 gauge is much better–the assault rifle is too deadly, has too much range, too much penetration power. It’s useless.”

Related: The House floor dissolved into chaos as Democrats protested the traditional moment of silence for shooting victims.
