The Gist:  ABC News hasn’t explained why it severed its partnership with New Hampshire’s largest newspaper for the next Republican debate. The paper has published front-page editorials criticizing Donald Trump.

From The Reporter’s Notebook

After Sen. John McCain questioned Sen. Ted Cruz’s eligibility to run for president given his Canadian birth, Cruz said that McCain only expressed doubt in an attempt to help Sen. Marco Rubio’s presidential bid. As TPM’s Caitlin MacNeal notes, McCain has been an outspoken critic of Cruz, once calling the Texas senator a “wacko bird.”

Agree or Disagree?

Josh Marshall: The existence of a document listing Ted Cruz’s mother Eleanor as a Canadian citizen and eligible voter in 1974 “does not prove that Cruz was a Canadian citizen (human error is always possible). Nor does it necessarily negate her son’s eligibility to run for President.” But there’s something striking about the Cruz’s campaign decision to “respond to the document’s existence by making claims that are simply demonstrably false.

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: “The republicans have fought against COOL (Country of Origin Labeling) for years now and now that they have control in both the senate and the house, even though some 80% of the American people are in favor of it, have managed to finally get it knocked completely out of being done. This is a huge victory for the 4 big cattle feeding operations in the US because they can bring in poorer quality and cheaper meat into the US, mix it with American beef, raise the price and sell it to the American consumer and make greater profits. This is always what the republican party stands for, and yet the American voters continue to elect them into office even when it costs them more. I guess they have to make up for all of those tax breaks they give to the richest Americans.”

Related: Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) secured language in the omnibus that repeals country of origin labeling on meats from cows to pigs.
