Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Thursday dismissed comments from Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) questioning whether the Texas senator was eligible to run for president given that he was born in Canada, arguing that McCain only expressed doubt in order to help Sen. Marco Rubio’s (R-FL) presidential bid.

“I think it is no surprise to anybody that John McCain is going to be supporting Marco Rubio in this election,” Cruz told “Bloomberg’s With All Due Respect.” “It’s no surprise at all that he’s trying to do what he can to help the candidate that he’s favoring who he thinks shares policy positions with him.”

“It’s not surprising that political opponents who are worried about our surging support among conservatives are trying to muddy the water and are trying to see if reporters will run down crazy rabbit trails because they want to distract from the simple reality that conservatives are uniting,” Cruz continued.

Donald Trump earlier this week resurfaced skepticism that Cruz can run for president as a U.S. citizen who was born in Canada to an American mother. The real estate mogul’s comments prompted Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) to say that Cruz’s eligibility is “worth looking into.” McCain himself was born in Panama on a military base, which did not exclude him from running for president.
