From The Reporter’s Notebook
Former Fox News host Gretchen Carlson accused network boss Roger Ailes of carrying out years of sexual harassment and retaliation before finally refusing to renew her contract last month. As TPM’s Katherine Krueger reports, Carlson’s complaint details a “hostile” work environment at Fox News, Ailes saying he would make or break her career, and eventually being fired from her morning show for refusing to enter a sexual relationship with Ailes.
Agree or Disagree?
Josh Marshall: “Sexual harassment, sex in the workplace and the much broader issue of coercion and the concept of consent are hot button political, legal and cultural issues today. We can’t ignore the fact that Fox News is one of the institutions at the center of this charged atmosphere. It’s not too much to say that in the Fox News bubble, and certainly among many Fox News viewers, sexual harassment is barely even a real thing. It’s a charge that temperamental or uptight women bring against gregarious or just non-PC guys either because of their ‘uptightness’ or to leverage some professional advantage. That’s an unvarnished way to put it, but it is the mindset that informs huge amounts of Fox News coverage and chatter.”
Say What?!
“It’s like Harvard, okay? So sad. So sad, okay? So sad.”
– Donald Trump praised Saddam Hussein for killing terrorists “so good” and called Iraq “Harvard for terrorism” during a Tuesday rally.
BUZZING: Today in the Hive
From a TPM Prime member: “Sanders may be simply boxed in here, and stuck with the fact that the other side of the table is in no rush to give in. If they wait him out his star fades. The platform committees vote and points of contention become moot. They can slow-roll him, and wait to see if he will give in early. The idea that he doesn’t give in at all is unlikely as it’s not really in his favor not to. Obama, Warren, Biden, and a long list of popular elected officials in key districts will be on board regardless. He provides a negative drag, yes, but one that may be cut loose at a later point. It’s a ticking clock scenario; he has little option but to arrive at a forgone conclusion.”
