As Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley becomes public enemy number one for Democrats in the United States Senate, conservatives back home applauded his decision not to even hold hearings on President Barack Obama’s eventual nominee to the Supreme Court. Iowa’s Polk County Republican Party Chairman Will Rogers told TPM writer Lauren Fox that “there’s been nothing but admiration for his position.” Other county chairmen told TPM they believed it would help Grassley in his primary.
Agree or Disagree?
“This has been crystallizing in my mind without my realizing it. And when I went back to Donald Trump’s Twitter feed it was more true than I realized. Trump doesn’t just tweet. He’s developed a sort of twitter-based, 140 character, insult haiku literary form. Not every one of his tweets follows the exact metrical progression. But most of them do. And those that don’t appear to be permutations or attempts at the model.” – Josh Marshall
BUZZING: Today in the Hive
From a TPM Prime member: “I agree–it was perhaps the best speech I’ve heard her give in a while. Perhaps ever. I’ve been a Hillary supporter this primary season, and this is a great night for her. But I would like to give credit where it’s also due: Hillary is a MUCH better candidate tonight than she would have been without Sanders. I think the difference is night and day (compared to what she would have likely been had she had a walk to the nomination). That’s not to say I think she’s somehow become less authentic. To the contrary, I think he’s forced her to find a place in herself that she perhaps hasn’t dared touch in a very long time. He has forced her to take risks, drop her guard, dig deeper with humility and fight for this nomination and the people she hopes to represent. As a result, she’s seriously upped her game, and found her voice, a clearer and more heartfelt message, and it’s a far better because of him: more caring, more genuinely empathetic, and thus more potent for the general. This is added to her already existing strengths: her depth of knowledge, her experience, her steely resilience. I know there are those on these forums who hate her. I’m not going to speak to them, as others have as well or better than I can. But to those who are understandably disappointed by Sanders’ showing tonight, all I can say is that, as a voter and a Democrat, I am enormously grateful to Sanders’ candidacy and his supporters. They have, in my view, done Hillary and the party undeniable, extraordinary good, even though I know that must feel like cold comfort. Still, I wanted to give credit where it’s due.”
