Donald Trump reportedly revised the fiery anti-immigration speech he gave Wednesday night in Phoenix, Arizona, after Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto tweeted that he’d told Trump his country would not pay for his proposed border wall, TPM’s Esme Cribb reported. “I have to add back the line that Mexico will pay,” Trump reportedly told the people who were with him when he saw the tweet, arguing that he could not let it go unanswered.
Agree or Disagree?
Josh Marshall: “I pressed the point of the wildly dissimilar campaign coverage of Trump and Clinton, particularly the continuing saturation coverage of Clinton ‘scandals’ in which she’s actually being exonerated and virtually no coverage of a pretty cut and dry pay-for-play story with Trump, his foundation and his efforts to protect himself legally from the fallout of the exposure of his real estate seminar scam business, ‘Trump University’. But the case with Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi is more serious than that. We usually use the phrase ‘pay-to-play’ when talking about money for access, money for government contracts or friendly interventions in the legislative process. The Trump-Bondi case looks like money in exchange for killing an investigation and possible lawsuit against Trump. It would be like Hillary Clinton making a cash payment to Loretta Lynch or James Comey during the email probe.”
Say What?!
“Things happen.”
– Jill Stein flew into the wrong Ohio city for a speech, landing in Cincinnati instead of Columbus, but rally attendees took it in stride.
BUZZING: Today in the Hive
From a TPM Prime member: “Actually, I think it is simpler than that. I think it’s how thin skinned [Trump] is. I believe the tweet from the Mexican Prez and Foreign Minister infuriated him, as he thought he had pulled off a brilliant con. He goes down there, talks about how great the Mexican people are, showing what a whiz of a diplomat he is, and before he gives the Phoenix speech, he’s on the defensive again because the Prez and FM of Mexico contradict him. In a mild sense, even his own VP contradicted him by noting paying for the wall was commented upon, but no substantive negotiations ensued, nor would they be appropriate.”
