GOP Lawmakers Wake Up To The Nightmare: Trump Ain’t Changing

The Gist: For months, Trump has made remarks and taken stances that many warned were dangerous, unlawful, and even racist.

From The Reporter’s Notebook

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) has never endorsed Trump, but the senator said Tuesday that Trump’s attacks against federal judge Gonzalo Curiel made his endorsement even less likely, TPM’s Lauren Fox reported. He also warned that similar comments could bring back the call to deny Trump the Republican nomination: “There is no talk of any convention challenge or anything else, this might spur it.”

Agree or Disagree?

Josh Marshall: “Trump has managed to shatter the fragile and improbable unity Republicans achieved after he clinched the GOP nomination last month. As of today, he seems to have achieved something even more impressive. A who’s who of Republican elected officials over the last 36 hours have openly said Trump’s attacks are ‘racist’ and ‘unforgivable’ and yet they will continue to support him. Because they need him to be president.”

Say What?!

“Being a little racist or very racist is not okay, but, quite frankly, the agenda that I see and all the microtargeting to blacks and Hispanics from a policy standpoint, you know, that’s more offensive to me.”

– GOP Rep. Lee Zeldin defended Trump by saying that President Obama and Democrats are also racist.

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: “Paul Ryan’s tepid ‘endorsement’ of Donald Trump for president of the United States of America, along with the endorsements of his former foes, (Lyin’) Ted Cruz, (Little) Marco Rubio, laid bare a theme: there are times when GOP seems to value their partisan interests over national interests. But these are minor examples and could be attributed to rough but regular politicking. Perhaps the most egregious example of this behavior is the repeated attempt by House Republicans to attempt to win an ideologically driven policy choice is to have put the full faith and credit of the United States at risk. That one goes even beyond partisan interest overriding national interest.”

Related: Ryan maintains that Republicans would still be better off with Trump in the White House than Clinton.
