Arizona’s Voting Problems Are More Complicated Than They Look

The Gist: Reports of Arizona voters waiting for as long as fives hours to cast their ballots is bringing intense scrutiny on local elections officials as well as renewed criticism of the 2013 Supreme Court decision that allowed them to make major changes to polling plans without the approval of the federal government. But the picture is more complicated, voting rights experts and former Justice Department officials tell TPM.

Trump: ‘There Are Things About Heidi I Don’t Want To Talk About’

The Gist: Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump didn’t rein in his attacks on Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX)’s wife, Heidi, on Sunday, saying that there were things about his rival’s wife that he “didn’t want to talk about.”

Kerry Defends Obama’s Travels: His Schedule Isn’t ‘Set By Terrorists’

The Gist:  Secretary of State John Kerry defended President Barack Obama traveling in the midst of an attack in Brussels in an interview aired Sunday by saying that the President’s scheduled isn’t “set by terrorists.”

From The Reporter’s Notebook

As part of its new family-oriented website, NRA Family, the National Rifle Association reimagined popular fairy tales by arming the main characters with guns, TPM’s Kristin Salaky reported. The site has so far redone Hansel and Gretel, changed to Hansel and Gretel (Have Guns) and Little Red Riding Hood to Little Red Riding Hood (Has A Gun).

Agree or Disagree?

Josh Marshall: “I noted on Friday that what seems very likely to be the Clinton v Trump general election match-up will be a gendered electoral armageddon – an unreconstructed, unabashed and angry male chauvinist against a women of great power and accomplishment who can more than hold her own against him. It will be ugly. But I think it will be Trump’s undoing. Remember, Clinton’s already beating Trump in all the head to head match ups (as is Sanders). So he doesn’t need much undoing. But I think he’ll get it. But there’s another element of the equation. Just imagine some higher octane version of what we’re already seeing right now – but with a difference. Now every time there’s some new outburst, every Republican candidate from dog catcher to Senator gets asked to denounce or endorse every time. Every time. It’s hard to be chained to a car like that you can’t control or predict.”

Say What?!

“You want to get into an argument? Then we’ll get into an argument. If that’s what you want, you want to get into an argument? Then we’ll get into an argument.”

-Donald Trump’s adviser, Stephen Miller, got testy with another CNN guest when the guest mentioned an interview Miller gave about Trump retweeting a picture that mocked Ted Cruz’s wife.

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: “I’m actually really, honestly curious about what socialism or social democracy or whatever you want to call it would look like when implemented over our federalist system of government. As it stands, states with more conservative leadership have done just about everything they can to thwart Obamacare, Common Core, etc. etc. To what extent would they be allowed/able to push back against ‘Medicare for all’ or ‘free college’? I feel like it would get really messy. Not that all messy/hard things aren’t worth fighting for, but I also don’t think Bernie is being square with his voters about what the effort would entail and how contentious/ugly things would get. And how many roadblocks and delays and legal challenges would be mounted. I mean, hello. The ACA barely made it and is still just trudging along. Someone can correct me if he ever does go into the process and the nuts and bolts and sausage making of actually getting legislation passed, enacted and protected in the courts. I’ve never heard him do that.”
