CHARLOTTE — President Obama’s half-sister and Michelle Obama’s brother testified to the first couple’s character in a convention speech on Tuesday.
“Our mother also taught us that everyone has worth, regardless of who they are or what they believe,” Obama’s sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng said. “That’s what inspired Barack’s vision for a more inclusive and compassionate America, where everyone has a part to play in our shared story.”
She cited in particular his signing of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, his appointment of two women tot he Supreme Court, and his success in ending Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.
“Making sure everyone in America has a chance to make it like he did–that’s what my big brother is all about,” she said. “And that’s what he’ll do for four more years.”
Craig Robinson spoke to his sister’s work as First Lady honoring military families and highlighting their struggles while spouses and parents are at war.
“America’s military spouses and families make profound sacrifices, too,” he said. “And Michelle promised that if she had the privilege to serve as first lady, she’d do everything she could to make sure America was there to honor, recognize and support their unique service. I’ve been so proud to watch her rally Americans to give millions of hours of their time in service to our military families.”
