Sixty-three percent of Americans think that failing to raise the debt ceiling would be a serious problem, according to an advanced copy of a NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released Thursday.
Seventy-two percent of Democrats think not raising the debt ceiling would be a mistake, which the Treasury Department has said must be done by Oct. 17. Fifty-seven percent of Republicans and Independents think so as well, according to the survey.
However, 71 percent of Republicans that do not support the Tea Party believe that failing to raise the debt ceiling would be a problem. Forty-four percent of Tea Party supporters would also be seriously troubled by a breach.
Full details on the NBC/WSJ poll are slated to be released Thursday at 6:30pm ET.
