“Dollar Bill” Gets a Run for His Money

Three Democrats have jumped into the race against Rep. William Jefferson (D-LA) and a fourth is on the way, the AP reports. The district is heavily Democratic, but there is no primary. If no candidate gets over 50 percent on Election Day in November, the top two would go to a December run-off. There is also a Republican candidate in the race, Joseph Lavigne, a political new-comer.

Meanwhile, the criminal investigation of Jefferson remains hung up in the courts, as Justice Department prosecutors still haven’t obtained the documents seized from Jefferson’s congressional office in May. Jefferson won an appeals decision awarding him a first look at the seized material; and now both sides are waiting on United States Magistrate Judge John Facciola from the District Court of D.C. to set up a procedure for handing the documents over to Jefferson.
