President Barack Obama will meet with senior Treasury Department officials to discuss the targeting scandal at the Internal Revenue Service on Wednesday afternoon, the White House announced.
Treasury Secretary Jack Lew (via phone) and Deputy Treasury Secretary Neal Wolin will join officials for the meeting at the White House.
An internal Treasury Department report found that ineffective management at the agency allowed employees to inappropriately single out conservative non-profit groups for additional reviews during in the run up to the 2012 election, focusing on such key words as “Tea Party,” ”Patriots” or “9/12 Project” in their applications.
Acting IRS commissioner Steven Miller reportedly said Wednesday that two “rogue” agents employed at the Internal Revenue Service’s Cincinnati branch were responsible for the “overly aggressive” reviews of conservative non-profit organizations.
House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) condemned the conduct, demanding that the administration prosecute those involved.
“The IRS admitted to targeting conservatives, even if the White House continues to be stuck on the word ‘if,'” he told reporters at a weekly briefing. “My question isn’t about who is going to resign. My question is who’s going to jail over this scandal?”
