Among both Latinos and Americans overall, Democrats claim an edge over Republicans when it comes to handling immigration, according to a poll released early Thursday.

The latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll showed a plurality of 37 percent of Latinos identifying the Democratic Party as the party that would do a better job handling immigration while just 11 percent said the Republican Party.

But the poll also suggested that Democrats shouldn’t rest on their laurels with Latinos. A little more than a quarter of Latinos said that the two parties are “both about the same” on the issue of immigration while 23 percent said neither would do a good job.

Americans overall are even more pessimistic about the ability of the two parties to handle immigration. Thirty-three percent of all American adults said neither party would do a good job on immigration while 21 percent said they are both about the same. But more respondents still gave the nod to Democrats than Republicans: 26 percent said the Democratic Party would do a better job on immigration while 19 percent said Republicans would do a better job.
