Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) on Monday offered a congratulatory message to his old “amigo” former Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT), who officially joined the conservative think tank American Enterprise Institute (AEI) earlier in the day.
McCain extended his well-wishes via Twitter:
Congrats to @joelieberman on joining @aei – a superb addition to a venerable institution. aei.org/press/foreign-…

As an often inseparable trio, McCain, Lieberman and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) were dubbed the “three amigos.” Lieberman left the Senate in January, and his place in the clique appears to have been assumed by Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), who joined Graham and McCain in leading the GOP’s intense criticism of the Obama administration’s handling of the September attack in Benghazi, Libya.
Lieberman will be joining AEI to join former Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ), who also exited the chamber in January, in leading the group’s “American Internationalism Project,” an effort to forge bipartisan consensus on U.S. foreign policy.
