The GOP lost the “argument for the American people” in the 2012 election cycle and risks losing more elections if it doesn’t articulate its positions to the American people, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) told a gathering of Republicans Thursday in Independence, Ohio.

“The Democrats’ story is the Republicans are the party of the rich, the Democrats are the party of everybody else. And if that’s the narrative people believe, we’ll never win another national election,” Cruz said, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer

Cruz closed his speech, according to the report, by saying a new crop of Republican leaders is emerging in the Obama era. “In 1980, it took Jimmy Carter to give us Ronald Reagan. And I remain convinced the longest lasting legacy of Barack Obama is going to be a new generation of leaders of the Republican Party who stand for liberty.”
