Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) on Thursday characterized allegations about his colleague Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ)’s trips to the Dominican Republic “too bad” if true, the New Jersey Star-Ledger reports

“If there are infractions as they are reported, it’s too bad,” Lautenberg said.

Menendez traveled to the Dominican Republic on Melgen’s plane three times, and a spokesman said Wednesday the senator personally paid $58,500 for two of the flights taken in 2010 on Jan. 4 of this year, which was after allegations concerning the trips surfaced.

A conservative website, the Daily Caller, has also reported that while on the trips, Menendez engaged in trysts with prostitutes, at least one of whom is underage.
