Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) indicated that he may be receptive to closing the so-called gun show loophole, calling it a policy area that should be explored during an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel published online Monday.
“I think that’s an area we need to look into,” Ryan told the newspaper’s editorial board, adding that he wants to close all loopholes without undermining the Second Amendment.
The former Republican vice presidential nominee also said the gun show loophole — which allows individuals to purchase firearms while eschewing a background check — represents an “obvious” problem.
“And I think we should look into how to do that,” he said.
But Ryan expressed opposition to bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, arguing that a prohibition on either would be ineffective.
