Monday evening brought a fresh twist in the case of John McAfee, the 67-year-old retired antivirus firm founder turned fugitive, wanted in Belize since November 11 for questioning in the suspected murder of a man described as his neighbor. After publishing an entry on his reported personal blog, “WhoisMcAfee.com” on Monday morning stating he’d successfully fled Belize and was in the company of his lover, Samantha, and two Vice journalists, Vice Magazine’s website Monday evening posted a photo of one journalist and McAfee.

But as intrepid reporters quickly noticed, the photo included metadata that revealed its location to be that of a place near Rio Dulce, Guatemala. McAfee rapidly posted to his blog anew, stating that he’d faked the metadata, and saying “I do not believe that Vice will remain with me further. Again, my apologies.”

Betabeat noticed that the photographer, Robert King, also claimed on his Facebook page the photo’s metadata was manipulated. But for someone on the run and allegedly innocent in the murder, McAfee has sure been unusually forthcoming with press, giving a video interview to CNN and calling into Bloomberg TV on Monday afternoon.
