President Obama issued a new warning to Syria on Monday following reports that the Assad regime was moving chemical weapons components in recent days.
“If you make the tragic mistake of using these weapons there will be consequences and you will be held accountable,” Obama said at a nuclear weapons symposium at the National Defense University in Washington.
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney also said on Monday that the White House was monitoring the situation closely.
“As the regime has lost all legitimacy to lead Syria and the opposition grows in strength, our concern about the regime’s intentions regarding its chemical weapons stockpiles has increased,” Carney told reporters in a separate news briefing.
