Former Independent Maine Gov. Angus King has a large lead in the US Senate race to replace retiring Sen. Olympia Snowe (R- Maine), according to a new poll from the Maine People’s Resource Center.
King sees a near majority of 47.6 percent, Republican candidate Charlie Summers gets 34 percent, and Democratic nominee Cynthia Dill is at 10.7 percent. King, a popular figure in the state that held the governorship from 1995 to 2003, has been the favorite in the state and has had a solid lead in the polls all along.
National groups backing Summers spent millions in the state to bring down King’s favorability rating, which did do some damage, but King has been able to hold his overall advantage.
The poll used 905 automated telephone interviews with likely Maine voters conducted Nov. 1-3. It has a sampling error 3.3 percent.
